And I realise avoiding the "improper shutdown" would remove the need.
Right now
the only sure way to do that is to replace the HDD, but I'd rather (in the
short
term at least) fix the Windows obsession with a surface scan.


Found the check-box in MSCONFIG. All sorted.


No - all you're doing now is ignoring the problem!!



The problem is that there is NO PROBLEM FOUND when Windows Scandisk does it's
quickscan and surface scan. No smoking gun.

YOU NEED TO STOP THE IMPROPER SHUTDOWNS!!!


I agree, but until I replace the drive I have needed a way to prevent
redundant/pointless surface scans at inopportune times.
