HOW DID I REINSTALL WINDOWS ME OVER ITSELF?

To reinstall WinMe (which has IE5.5 and WMP7.1) overtop IE6SP1 and
WMP9, I followed advice that someone in a different Microsoft WinMe
newsgroup gave.

It was Oops!! (Zee) in the microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.setup
newsgroup. (Sorry, I thought that it was a WinMe newsgroup.) My display
name was SeaSpeeder for that thread, but I have since changed it to
ForestSpirit. Here is the link to that thread in case you want to read a
little history (12-31-04 to 01-05-05).

MVP Doug Varnau also posted http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com/ReInIE.htm
to that thread. It's moot now but IMO it would have been best if you'd
heeded his suggestion and Noel's page. Your problem then and now was/is
with the OS, not IE or its install.

This is what I'm afraid of. I'll uninstall IE6 and OE and then have
nothing left. There is no OE5.5 info to go back to as the folder was
empty when I started.

Of course you'll need to backup your OE data:

Had you upgraded to IE6 SP1 before you reinstalled WinME? Your posts
haven't been clear (to me) on that.

Yes, several times. I prefer reinstalling rather than reformatting.

As I've tried to point out, WinME is rather persnickety when it comes to
reinstalling after having upgraded to IE6. Noel and other WinME users
learned this the hard way. I advise you to benefit from their experience
and follow all steps in http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com/ReInIE.htm now.
If you don't, I don't think you'll ever be able to install 837009.

Because my Windows CD is OEM, I have absolutely no support from Microsoft.

Even if you had a retail version, there is very limited support for any
Win9x (Win98, Win98SE, WinME) OS now.

Noel's instructions are complicated. I'm going to need help at some point.
I'm going to read through them again and write down a list of questions to
post here.

You could discontinue crossposting to OE6 Newsgroup in that event.

Good luck.
