Default Why???

I understand all that, and XP home works fine. I used ME for 3 months, and
had to reinstall windows about 6 times. This same machine had 98se for some
time, ran perfect, I then installed XP pro, and again, ran perfect. I run a
computer repair shop, and we had zero successful Win ME computers work, we
reverted back to 98se until it was gone, then made the jump to XP. None of
our clients had ME for over 6 months because it was so horrible, even for
single use.

Why do people still use Windows ME? Just upgrade to XP already.

There are many possible reasons including a) cost, b) limited hardware and
c) it meets their needs. Not everything we do needs the fastest, latest
or greatest. Slightly off topic but I maintain a small cctv system on the
development where I live. The PC running this is running XP Home. What
is perhaps different is that it is still XP Home RTM, no patches, no
service packs, no anti-virus, no anti-malware and with no firewall
enabled. Of course it has just one purpose, to monitor 16 cameras, to
detect motion and write data to disk and it has no internet connection.
Similarly I know that some here use PCs running Win Me for document
production and similar and never connect to the net. Others just use
their machines for e-mail and browsing, activities that don't require fast
modern and perhaps expensive hardware. Naturally those running Win Me,
like those running other older unsupported operating systems such as
Win98, 98SE and even NT4 and connecting to the internet need to take
reasonable precautions to prevent their systems being compromised given
that patches are no longer being made available for recently discovered
vulnerabilities.
