Check your firewall isn't blocking?
You do have the browser set to connect through the modem, don't you? - not
through the LAN???

Well it was working OK before I ran the Windows Update.
The Modem dials up the ISP and connects OK. But I can't ping any external
address, nor get any DNS resolution for the Internet.

I have tried connecting with a different laptop and modem, noted the
ipconfig results, and then compared it with the problem machine ipconfig.
Results are identical.

I can connect the problem machine via a USB Wifi adapter through my router
- all that works fine.

I 'll try looking for a modem driver update, maybe that's the problem.

Alternatively, I can try to undo the Windows updates, or else try a System
restore to the point prior to it all going pear-shaped.

The ISP provides a valid IP address - Winipcfg looks
normal,

DNS
names displayed are as expected.

Unfortunately, the machine is installed with the Swedish
language
(which I
can barely understand), and I am concerned I may have done
something
stupid
during the update, because of the language difficulty.

I think TCP is OK as it connects to my network using the
USB
Wifi.
However,
I can't ping my ISP's DNS server.

Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem and what
I
need to
do
to
fix it?
