Hey again Mart,
I will try your suggestion after I review KB 129605 and KB
265371 to insure I understand how to extract and copy the
..exe to the desktop. Even if it doesn't help, thanks to
you, I will learn something new.

May be a while til I can give you feedback as I'm trying to
prepare my system (and myself) to change out my hard drive.

Job says, "If I was any happier I'd have to be twins."

Job, like Noel, I'm pretty much out of ideas too.

However, as a final WAG, try extracting a fresh copy of

wordpad.exe from
WIN_17.CAB in the Widows\Options folder and put it on your

desktop. Then try
running it from there.

Just a very, very long shot.

BTW - don't worry that mfc42.dll doesn't appear in the

contents of the .inf
file. It's actually called-up by the .exe file and not the

..inf file. Which
is one of the things (I think) that the Filemon - Regmon

tool (which Alan
mentioned earlier) *should* help you to confirm/determine.

The created date is the date on which the file was

created *on your
system* - the Modified date speaks for itself (I assume

that you installed
ME on March 24 2003???)

Everything else looks normal to me - whether you need

the extra shortcuts
or not is up to you.

Sorry - I'm out of ideas, now

Noel and Mart, I want to thank you for continuing to

help
me.
Wordpad search shows the following:
WORDPAD.INF in WINDOWS\INF
Created March 24, 2003, 11:39:45
Modified June 08, 2000, 17:00:00
Wordpad in WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
Target is "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE"
WORDPAD.LGC in WINDOWS\APPLOG
WORDPAD.CHM in WINDOWS\HELP
WORDPAD.GID in WINDOWS\HELP
WORDPAD.CNT in WINDOWS\HELP
WORDPAD.HLP in WINDOWS\HELP
WORDPAD.chw in WINDOWS\HELP
Wordpad in WINDOWS\Profiles\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\
Accessories
Wordpad in WINDOWS\Profiles\jim barnes\Desktop
Wordpad in WINDOWS\Profiles\jim barnes\Start
Menu\Programs\
Accessories
*the 3 preceeding Wordpads are shortcuts but are they
needed?
WORDPAD.EXE in C:\Program Files\Accessories
Ver 5.0.1691.1
Created March 24, 2003, 11:42:18
Modified June 08, 2000, 17:00:00

Hope this info will tell you something.

Do you know why the WORDPAD.INF and WORDPAD.EXE

"Created"
dates can be later than the "Modified" dates?

Another question-Mart previously suggested I verify
OPTIONS\Install sub-folder contained the proper version

of
mfc42.dll which I did. I just did a search for

mfc42.dll in
WINDOWS\INF Setup Instructions and did not find it. Is

this
the right finding?

Ah - thanks for telling me that I forgot to enable

hidden
files before
Searching, Mart!

That INF file makes interesting reading!
Job - the INF file should be left alone - although
'installing' it might be
a possible solution - check the Properties for it....
Created and Modified date 8th June 2000
Size7.47KB (7,652bytes)

There is a WORDPAD.INF file too, associated Noel.

Also, it pulls a couple of .dll's (including

mfc42.dll)
but I'm not sure
which others.

(I'm sure I've seen this before, but I'm blowed if I

can
remember the fix)

Job
Just a thought, but it may be worth checking the
version number for
WordPad itself -
Do a Search for "Wordpad"
The Wordpad.exe file should be in the C:\Program
Files\Accessories
folder, 200KB, dated 8th June 2000, v5.0.1691.1
Any other Wordpad.exe files should be deleted
You should also have
WORDPAD.CHM
WORDPAD.CNT
WORDPAD.HLP
Wordpad (no extension) - this is the shortcut in

the
Programs folder.
r-click on it, select Properties, and make sure

that
it's configured
properly.... the Target is "C:\Program
Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe"
(INCLUDING the quotes!)
if there's anything else in the 'Target' bot, then
delete it.
