I have K-Meleon 1.54 installed in Win98se. (Along with other
browsers). I have used K-Meleon for years and still like it,
despite the repeated script errors (I just keep Java Script
turned off).

Anyhow, after years of using it, for some reason in the last
several months, I keep getting a message popup that says

"A new version of K-Meleon has been released - Do you want
to install it now".

I can find no mention on the internet anywhere of anything resembling
that message in relation to K-Meleon, and I can find no discussion or
mention of any behavior or setting that K-Meleon may have to perform
automatic version or update checks.

However, since K-Meleon is based on Mozilla, I believe that if you go
into your configuration settings (with about:config) and search for
"app.update" you should see about a dozen such entries.

Specifically, look for "app.update.enabled". If you don't see that,
then create it (right-click somewhere on the page, select new, boolean.
The name will be app.update.enabled, and the value you want it to be is
false.

Any newer versions do NOT work with Win98 (I tried).

You should be able to run newer versions if you install KernelEx on your
win-98 system.

------------
Windows 98\ME

OFFICIAL: Use K-Meleon v1.5.4

UNOFFICIAL: Use K-Meleon v1.7 with KernelEX v4.5.2 (Run in Windows 2000
compatibility mode)

i have kernelex 4.5.2 installed. No ver of KMeleon above 1.5.4 is
stable, just like no ver of firefox above 3.6.28 is stable. Ive tried
all of this more than once and kernelex helps but it exaggerates what it
can do. Sure it will run FF 5.x or was it 6.x, but if it crashes
regularly, its' not working.

May also need Visual C++ 2005 runtime installed

What does that do?

--------------

Anyone still running Windows 98 should really have KernelEx installed.

Yep, been running it for many years. I ONLY use Win98, and Win2000
also, but I will never go above that. I fought with XP and all the
viruses it attracts, and got rid of it. Any newer MS operating sys is
crap. I played with linux and found that thing beyond repulsive.

Honestly, I dont much care. I just thought I'd see if I could remove
this annoyance in Kmeleon. I wont be using the internet much longer
anyhow. It used to be both fun and useful. Now that facebook has
devoured the web, and the newsgroups are nearly dead, about all I use is
email, and the few newsgroups that still have life. Just once and
awhile I may try to find an article on the web, from what's left to it.
In another year from now, the newsgroups will be entirely dead, and
facebook will own the web. I will probably do all my email from my
cellphone and just dump the internet completely. The only reason I
still use the internet now, is because I still need a landline, and
dialup internet is included free.

Anything else I do on this computer, such as music, playing videos,
office/word processing, and photo editing, and other programs work just
fine in Win98se, even on this 15 year old computer (which I have
upgraded many times, with bigger hardrives ans the maximum RAM.

Thanks
