Default K-Meleon issue

I have K-Meleon 1.54 installed in Win98se. (Along with other browsers).
I have used K-Meleon for years and still like it, despite the repeated
script errors (I just keep Java Script turned off).

Anyhow, after years of using it, for some reason in the last several
months, I keep getting a message popup that says "A new version of
K-Meleon has been released - Do you want to install it now".

Any newer versions do NOT work with Win98 (I tried).

But this popup never pestered me in the past. Now it pops up about
every 6th time I open K-Meleon. This is really annoying. I can not
find anything in the settings to shut this off. But I am aware of the
"about:config" use. Yet, I dont know what lines to search for in there
to stop this popup. Anyone know?

I'm guessing that K-Meleon did something to cause this to start popping
up. I didn't change anything....
