I've never seen so many error messages one-after-another!

Sounds like 98 needs reinstalling

When the error message is closed it is replaced by
MMTASK, page fault in
OLE32 at same address

Close this, get NISUM same fault at same address
Close this , get EXPLORER same fault at same address

Close this , get Active desktop recovery message and
EXPLORER same fault
message.

Close this, desktop goes back to blue background and
EXPLORER fault comes up
again.

Subsequent closing of the EXPLORER error just loops back
to Explorer message
again.

I have carried out a virus scan of the drive over the
network from another
PC, nothing found.

Any pointers?
