Default Registry changes

Try he
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...nu&svy=&csm=no

There are instructions on manually uninstalling Norton products on the
Symantec site.(they are hard to find though)

What reference did you delete?
Try this old response of mine:

Edit System.ini with Notepad or Sysedit (Start-Run-Sysedit) and

see if
there is a line in the [386Enh] section.
device=symevnt.386
Remove the line if there.

Next, use Regedit.exe and remove any reference to Symevnt.386
Start-Run-Regedit.
Navigate down to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD
Expand VXD, find Symevnt and delete if there.
Restart the computer when finished.

You should be able to achieve the above in safe mode

Thanks again Gary. I have gone into the registry and deleted the

reference
to the symevent.386 but still get the same boot up DOS message!?

I will re-install the "bloody" application and then try to

uninstall it
and
your correct that their site does not seem to have any reference

to this
"problem" (I have searched).

Thanks.

No, unfortunately I can't give you manual instructions. I'd

always
heard
good
things about Norton's clean-up tools. I've used them several

times with
no
ill
effect. Unfortunately, it appears as if their site has made

finding
these
things
more difficult. Or maybe I'm just tired, s.

Seriously, they load *so_much* crap into the Registry and

elsewhere,
using
various names, that *I* would be hard pressed to clean up after

Norton.
Worse
yet, "your" versions are so old, now, that specific Support for

then is
unavailable (at least, I can't find it.) The messages you are

getting
appear to
refer more to Live Update than to the specific programs, and I

suspect
that that
is where your primary problem is. Live Update for

Norton/Symantec
products
is
installed separately--has it's own uninstaller. All I can

suggest is
what
little
I've found at their website--reinstall the apps and then try

uninstalling
again.

I have both of the programs you're speaking of (in my pile of

stuff)
and
given
time, I could come up with some answers, but I'm just a bit too

busy at
this
time and not really in a place where I can devote a test

installation
to
it.

Thanks Gary for your advice.

The DOS message suggests that the "start" is in either the

System.ini
file
or the registry. Following your advice I also checked the

Win.ini
file
and
there is nothing in either win or system.ini files only in

the
registry.

I am very reluctant to try Symantec/Norton and was thinking

that a
"manual"
edit would be a better option.

Can you give some precise instruction please?

Thanks

Go to the Norton site and get whatever version is required

of their
own
"clean
up" utility. Their software is so notoriously difficult to

uninstall
and
clean
out that they make special apps to do it for you. It's not

an easy
chore
to
accomplish, otherwise. In fact, I'd say it's near

impossible unless
you're
a
true expert.

Also, the actual startup entry you're looking for is, I

think, more
likely
to be
in WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI (I forget which--the latter, I

think.)

A friend has asked me to "fix" her old Compaq Presario

3000
(about
early
90's model I think) that has Win98 o/s.

We have tried uninstalling a number of Symantec/Norton

programs
(Norton
Utilities and Norton Uninstall Deluxe). Was not able to

uninstall
one of
these via its own uninstall routine and not able to fully

uninstall
via
the
Add/Remove program in Control Panel either.

When the computer now boots up we get a DOS message

saying that
the
computer
is looking for Symevnt.386. Hitting the Enter key allows

the
computer to
complete its boot successfully. After a "search" in the

Registry
I
have
noted a number of entries in Local
Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current

Version\SharedDLLS
that
refer
to
SYMANTEC (Live Updates etc ) including SYMEVNT.386.

How can I safely delete these entries? I ran MS's

RegClean but
that
made no
difference.
Thanks for any help.
