Default ME broadband and a router

Not so much 'trouble' Harry, more a PITA. Having lived with XP (and ME of
course) for the past few years, just wonder why MS needed to re-invent
(complicate) stuff - Oh! $ales. And like most things MS, not necessarily
(backwards) compatible with other of their own products.

Ok, I can smell the coffee.
Judging by Noel's replies, he didn't seem to have sobered up yet.
Surely I can appreciate waking up in the morning and "celebrate"
Keep up the good work, Mart. H.

... so what's so awful about Vista Mart ?

e.g. - It's the constant "Windows needs your permission to continue"
box. An extra key press. And when you try to turn it off in User
Account Control, it nags and shames you to death till you re-enable it.
Oh! - and permissions .... for everything??
What about the .contacts extension? (John Smith.contact)
Mike gave me a registry fix for that - but I've forgotten it. I'll have
give him a call.

... but if you have the hardware to run it I don't see a problem

I have a Canon LiDE 25 scanner which works perfectly in XP - and is
allegedly Vista compatible (although does need Vista drivers).

Can I get it to work *properly* in Vista? - No way!! Sure, I can get it
to 'function' after a fashion. Hell, it doesn't even get recognised
properly or work in Control Panel/Scanners & Cameras. (To be fair, I
haven't yet tried installing the scanner on this new laptop - but I
couldn't get it to run satisfactorily on a previous laptop under Vista.
Just hope the W7 upgrade resolves some of these issues - but not holding
my breath g

Must say that I am surprised at all the trouble you are having with
'Vista', Mart. As Joan pointed out, it has a 'bad' name but, as for me,
it works just fine as did/does ME, only better. Those 'permissions'
don't bother me at all and neither do the other things people complain
about, because they aren't there for me. The 'only' problem I encounter
is the 'slow' opening of the video play and that may rather be the fault
of the machine than the OS.
A lot of the success with Vista has to do with the installation and
configuration of the system. It is a memory hog and must be dealt with
accordingly.
To my understanding Windows 7 isn't going to be much different. For the
time being I stick with what I've got.
Best of luck with it,

Harry.

Aah thanks I wasn't far off then g

I pre-ordered Windows 7 from Tesco while the offer was on so I'm
getting it for £44.97 and free shipping g Don't do laptops don't need
to move around so there's no point in having one really. Kelly has one
and she loves it plus we both use Vista so what's so awful about Vista
Mart ?

I know it's classed as the baddie, a bit like WinME was when you think
about it, but if you have the hardware to run it I don't see a problem
and if that laptop came installed with it it should be up to the job.

Hi Joan, it's the 28th July actually, so - snap! - for being one day
out. And for Heather, the clue to the 'number' is in my email address
(elsewhere). Sorry I missed yours - thought I had a note of it but
seemingly no so.

Windows 7 side gI'm looking forward to getting my copy in October

Just acquired a new laptop (b'day present) with Vista (awful) and PC
World promise a 'free' upgrade (£20 shipping??) of W7 in October.
Paperwork procedure sounds like a potential minefield. Nobody at the
store had a clue. Their web link and help line give no details at all
(yet?)

I think I've got most of them apart from Heirloom, which reminds me
haven't seen him around here for ages I'll have to drop him a line,
and Mart but I think he is 29th July if I remember correctly, have to
wait for him to confirm.

I like that one for you from the "Old Versions" site g

Have you got that router set up yet and when are you coming over to
the Windows 7 side gI'm looking forward to getting my copy in
October I've got the partition ready for it.

Maybe we should make up a list of birthdays with month and day
ONLY......for all of the OLD regulars who still secretly meet here,
lol.

And then again, maybe not. I had to laugh at one I got (Mart you
forgot mine too).....but it was from one of my favourite websites
saying......."Happy Birthday from Old Versions"

That made my day. (G)

How well I know the feeling that poor old Rocky has. I still
have not hooked up my DLink 784 wireless router to this
machine........but still trying to sort out some puzzling
things Willy did.

Would the free program "Network Magic" help Rocky out?? I
don't have the link, but do have it downloaded......someone on
here recommended it.

PA Bear helped me out with removing IE8 cuz I couldn't open
pictures, but I am having bad luck with reinstalling my *.dbx
files. Willy put his company name at the top of that tree
instead of my name and I am wondering if that is why. I think
I am going to have to take it over to him to fix up. I have no
Cookie or Temp. Internet File folders and that bugs me. I can
remove them via the back door but figure after what I paid that
it should be the same as before.....but then I was always
rather picky, grin.
