Thx. I'll try other sources. I agree with you about MS Word now. I have
had a lot of problems with it. I find that it could use a lot of work.
The way it is programmed insults the intelligence of the user. More
sophisticated options should be available to us for composing documents
with line art and graphics imported as objects and more options for
typesetting and merging documents with WYSIWIG capability. Also, more
powerful printing and file output options like making PDF files from
multiple separate documents etc...

Thx again,

I have a particular situation with some Microsoft Word files. I wrote a
book about Trigonometry. Because of the complicaitons with making
graphincs using line art and the equation editor, I opted to create each
page of the book as a separate Word file. I added the page numbers as
footers after the book was complete. I tried to merge the files into one
but the formating on some of the pages was scrambled or lost even when I
applied page brakes. I used Microsoft Binder as a last resort, and it
would've worked nicely, but there is no way to override its page
numbering system. It always changes the footers that I defined, even
when I set them to stay the same. I really need a simple program that
will just allow me to put Word files into a single print job without
changing anything. I can't believe how hard it has been just to do this
little simple thing! It's frustrating.

This looks unlike an operating system
problem. You will probably get better advice
in specialized MS NGs for this software or for
MS Office. (It is quite ironic that so many
academic publishers have adopted MS Word
as their preferred word processor when it is
so unsuitable, e.g. actively resists the use of
French and English typographic conventions
in the same paper, as Canadians so often
require.)
