Default PDF vs. Resources

At times Adobe Acrobat Reader6 seems to eat up a tremendous amount of either
memory and/or system resources, specifically when downloading larger pdf
files, up to the point where there is not enough memory left and it is being
suggested to exit some programs, in order to free up space.
Is there anything that can be done to avoid or prevent this from happening
and, if so, what would it be?
Given enough time the pc recovers on its own and I already did disable some
start-up items with 'msconfig'.

Harry.
