Hello, I have a four year old pc with a one year old hard
drive that is divvied into two partitions with win98se and
winxp pro on the primary and extended partitions
respectively. I've got a 933mhz pIII cpu and 512mb of
sdram. I've recently noticed a drastic slowdown in
performance when browsing my hard drive's folders in
win98's windows explorer. folders in the explorer window
take forever to open and when i close the explorer window
it also takes a noticably long time to close. this
performance issue is not across-the-board, apps open and
run just fine, the prob is just in win explorer. i've
defragged my hard drive with Norton Systemworks, that
didn't help. I have Norton Internet Security '03 and
Norton Antivirus '02 installed and running at all times,
along with Lavasoft AdAware and SpyBot S&D, which I update

If you have a lot of folders in My Documents, move them to another
folder, at least temporarily and see if it helps.
If you have around 100+ folders in My Documents, it can cause the
similar symptoms to that above.
Quick and easy to try. You can always move the folders back if it
doesn't help.

and scan the comp with regularly, so it seems unlikely that
a piece of malware is the problem. Finally, another odd
thing is that when i'm in xp, i can browse and open files
and folders in the 98 partition with normal speed. any
help would be greatly appreciated.
