Job, it's good to hear that my WAG worked - but in fairness, it was more of
an 'inspired guess' than a 'WA' one g I'm pretty sure that I had come
across this (or a very similar) situation before - very feint bells were
ringing.

Regarding extracting files. If Noel hadn't beat me in responding to you
question as to whether you should copy or extract the file from the CAB
folder, I would have suggested copy and pasting to your Desktop (which would
have also extracted or 'expanded' it in the process). However, Noel (not
Mike g), quite rightly and wisely, gave you the 'correct' - official -
response.

I frequently copy and paste some of these WinMe files from my CAB files onto
my desktop and then delete them for various reasons e.g. to confirm sizes,
versions, dates, try-out, etc., when researching for these News Group
replies and have NEVER had an issue with SFP in this respect. BUT - maybe
I've just been lucky g

Which reminds me of another feint bell. I'm sure that there was a 'utility'
or maybe a 'short procedure' kicking around when WinMe first came out that
'demonstrated' how SFP worked. It let you 'try' to delete a protected file
and a couple of seconds later would advise you that the file had been
restored. I can't find it now of course, but wonder if any of the other
'old-timers' remember it - or even have a copy/details.

Now back to your ORIGINAL copy of WORDPAD.EXE. If you still have it (not
deleted it yet!) take a look at its Properties and see how it compares with
your 'new' copy (esp. length). It *might* give you a clue as to what went
wrong with the original copy.

Thanks for the response Alan.

I had to use some instructions as I have never done any
extracting of files. Mike's method is clear cut, simple and
idiot proof. As for KB 129605, IMO it has a lot of CHAFF.
g

Your recommendation of "where to put it" makes sense.
Cheers.

Well done!
You really didn't need to use KB 129605 as you knew it was

in
Win_17.cab and you could have just opened that and

extracted
Wordpad.exe but the method Mike suggested is the standard

way and is
outlined in KB 129605 (once you sort out the chaff)

Where to put it?
You might find it easier to put Wordpad.exe where it is

normally, as
you will have shortcuts and associations pointing to it

there.

C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE

Your PING seems OK to me. I think all four of us will see

it clearly.

Mart, I finally got around to trying your last

suggestion:
snipHowever, as a final WAG, try extracting a fresh

copy
of wordpad.exe from
WIN_17.CAB in the Widows\Options folder and put it on

your
desktop. Then try
running it from there.snip

I attempted to go by KB 129605 How To Extract Original
Compressed Windows Files but as happens too often for me

I
found the instructions confusing.

Luckily I had a printout handy of a Mike Maltby

12/08/2004
06:11 post to the windowsme.systemtools that was much
clearer and I quote:
"use MSConfig (Start I Run and enter MSConfig in the box

and
click OK). On the General tab you will find "Extract
File...", click this, enter the name of the file to be
extracted and click OK. If asked enter the location of

the
Win Me cab files (C:\Windows\Options\Cabs or
C:\Windows\Options\lnstall or in your case the folder on
your CD, H:\Wingx) and the location where you want to

place
the extracted file and then click OK."

I specified Desktop as the location to place the

extracted
file, double clicked the wordpad.exe on the Desktop and
Wordpad opened right up. So Mart, your final WAG was a

real
winner.

Thanks to all that helped me with this problem. Now I

plan
on deleting wordpad/wordpad.exe from all locations

(except
current Desktop), creating a C:\WINDOWS\Wordpad folder

and
moving the wordpad.exe from the Desktop to this new

folder.
Is this a correct thing to do??

P.S. Is this PING a proper way to provide feedback to a
thread several days old?
