I have no Office. I do have MSWorks & MSMoney, but no MDM.exe that I can
find.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

If you do not have Office installed, you won't have it. Not sure if
other apps use it, like Works.

Has anyone noted the continuous running of MDM.exe (Machine Debug
Manager)?
That .exe is not on my win98 SE, which is not to say that it is not a
valid
.exe but.......

I agree - get rid of Norton, and Find Fast (that is probably in
Control

Glad you found something to help steer you through the resolution of
this problem. My comments for whatever they're worth are;
1) You appear to be running two AV programs, one of which is an
known
resource hog as Richard Harper indicated. As long as you using
Grisoft, you do not require Norton. Disable it and watch the
improvement.
2) I note you have removed from your STARTUP Microsoft Office. I
don't
know if this automatically stops the known resource hog FIND FAST,
or
if it must be disabled separately . Maybe someone with knowledge
will
chime in.

OK, I should have done this before bothering this group ... I found
a
cool
website (http://answersthatwork.com/) that explains almost
everything
that
was on my list. I removed 6 from my startup:
loadqm.exe
NvMcTray.dll
taskmon.exe
TeaTimer.exe
OSA9.exe
DRWATSON.EXE
I could remove the Resource Meter because it takes up resources
also, but
I've gotten to where I keep an eye on it to see if I need to
reboot.
We'll see if removing these improves my performance.
I still would like to know if there is some other tweaking I could
do.
Thanks,
Debbie

You seem to have a LOT of stuff in there!!! You can (with
prudence)
selectively uncheck each of the fluffy ones in there, one by one,
to
find
out which ones are the real hogs.
Why are you even running some of those in the startup, like (for
example) Dr
Watson? I don't know what the APC thing is, and Norton can be a
bit of
a
hog too.
Let's see if some others can weigh in with more specifics.

I am having big problems with my Win 98 SE PC having the
resources
sucked
out of it. Right now, according to the Resource Meter, it is:
System Resources: 32%
User Resources: 32%
GDI Resources: 63%
I usually have to reboot in order to get it back up. Usually,
I'm
running
Outlook, Outlook Express, and maybe a couple of IE windows. I
have 256
RAM.
I don't know what to tweak in order to fix this problem. Here's
what
is in
my startup:
command: C:\PROGRAM FILES\GRISOFT\AVG6\avgcc32.exe /startup - in
my
SysTray
command: C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG6\Avgserv9.exe
command: c:\windows\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup (Windows
Critical
Update)
command: DAW9532.EXE (3COM network card)
command: c:\mouse\system\em_exec.exe (mouse)
command: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\hpztsb04.exe (HP DeskJet Taskbar
Utility) -
in
my SysTray
command: Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
command: Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
command: loadqm.exe (MSN Queue Manager)
command: C:\NKLINE GLOBAL\MODEM BOOSTER\ModemBtr.exe - in my
SysTray
command: c:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAPW32.EXE (Norton anti-virus) -
in my
SysTray
command: C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMON.EXE (Norton Live Update)
command: RUNDLL32.EXE c:\windows\SYSTEM\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
(NVIDIA
Media
Center Library)
command: RUNDLL32.EXE
c:\windows\SYSTEM\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
command: nwiz.exe /install (NVIDIA nView Wizard)
command: c:\windows\scanregw.exe /autorun (Scan Registry)
command: c:\windows\taskmon.exe (Task Monitor)
command: C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal
Edition\mainserv.exe
command: C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal
Edition\Display.exe
(APC UPS Status) - in my SysTray
command: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MDM.EXE (Machine Debug Manager)
command: mstask.exe (Scheduling Agent) - in my SysTray
command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Script
Blocking\SBServ.exe" -reg
command: C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYBOT - SEARCH &
DESTROY\TeaTimer.exe - in
my
SysTray
command: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
command: C:\WINDOWS\RSRCMTR.EXE (Resource Meter) - in my SysTray
command: C:\WINDOWS\DRWATSON.EXE - in my SysTray
Is something listed above sucking up resources? Is there
something
that I
should uncheck? Is there somewhere else I should be checking?
This is
getting so old having to restart.
Thanks for any advice,
Debbie
