Default What's the Fix?

186111 - Windows 95,98and ME Setup Switches
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=186111
I believe "Aldo" is suggesting you re-run setup using the /pj switch so that
the ACPI bios is detected.
Here is a procedure saved from befo

"Boot from a floppy, type setup / p j for the cd rom you are using( ie if
your cd rom is D:, type D:, enter then at D: prompt, type setup / p j ) ,
this will load advance power management, if you don't do this , you may have
conflicts and the computer won't shut down.(thanks hiway star) doS"

and a little more info from another user:

" I swapped a HD from a nonATX-Motherboard + nonATX-Case to a ATX-MB +
ATX-Case.

Did you reinstall Windows? If not, then the hardware configuration doesn't
match the installed version of Windows. You have to reinstall Windows (on
top of itself will do). You may want to rename or delete the following file
after you boot to startup diskette and just before you run Windows setup:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

This is the critical file that needs to be rebuilt, and can only be rebuilt
during a Windows install.

When I do a shutdown It still displays the message "you may shutdown the
computer" and it waits.
I'm sure the auto-sutdown should work, another HD (with Win98 installed in
an ATX enviroment) proves that.

See? That's the point. The installed version of Windows has to match the
baseline hardware. This determination is made at Windows installation.
Anytime you change motherboard or CPU, and sometimes with other hardware,
it's a good idea to reinstall Windows atop itself.

I suspect its a value somewhere in the registry, does anybody know wich?
Or does anybody know a solution for this, without reïnstalling win98?

Nope. Not in the Registry. As above.

Nothing wrong with reinstall Windows. I think what you are trying to avoid
is deleting your current Windows first. The solution, as mentioned above, is
to install Windows on top of itself.

I could not follow the friends and computers in your case but I hope this
clarifies some of your issues.

The power source is for the ATX form factor MB, but, I'm totally in the

dark
about implementing the instructions you offer. Can you give me a bit more

in
details, e.g., where are these instructions typed?

No, I did not (and neither did my friend - he merely upgraded from

Win98
to
WinME with someone else's help) install WinME at all. The OS (and all

other
of his applications) was already on a friend's hard drive when I gave

him
a
newer (newer than his) computer (which did auto-shut-down). His old

computer
( had a neck-snapping 233 MHz CPU and older than year 2000) probably

did
not
even have automatic shut-down capability, so any files that governed
auto-shut-down remained on the hard drive.

Do you install Win ME with Params "install.exe /p j ???
This parameters active the ACPI Mode for energy manager.....(this

necesary
for shutdown automatically) in Releases of BIOS after 2000 year..
