Normally, unless the PC is terribly dated, the bios should find both ATAPI
devices.

The Mobo is pretty new. It accepts an 800Mhz processor and maybe one
step higher than that.

Some CD reading devices require a mscdex entry to work in wondows. But, its
rare. You have a name brand PC, if so what is the brand name?

The motherboard is an Iwill. The model number is in the basement.

You or someone changed hardware. What hardware was changed from what to
what?

Every piece of hardware came from somewhere different in my friend's
fleet of computers. Two at his house, two at his mother's, and one or
two others, all of which get upgraded either once in a while or all in
the same year.

(I wish he would give me the CD's that come with the devices, but he
says I should download the files. Of course that usually only gives
drivers, and not the application programs most things come with. But
beggars can't be choosers.)

Was the hard drive pulled from another PC? If so, did it have the original
operating system while it was moved?

I'm sure it was. I don't plan to use it, only 4 gig, but I thought it
would be good enough to test with.

I haven't figured out the best way to do it, but I want to clone my
current harddrive, with all my email complete and assemble the new one
before I retrieve email again. So I want to know all the hardware I
plan to use works, and works well with this mobo.

My CD Rom isn't found by windows 98SE. One of the two installed is
recognized by the beginning BIOS hardware display.

First a background question that might be related. Does it matter if
the line in config.sys and autoexec.bat for the CD operate or not,
once one gets to windows?

(There are three lines in the config.sys that end in " /d:mscd001 "
but if the oakcdrom.sys is allowed to run, config.sys freezes (as
shown with step-by-step start). Then, even though the other two lines
have run ok, the line in autexec.bat, c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe
/d:mscd001 , shows an error because there is no mscd001!)

Second, when windows starts, it only shows A:, B: and C: drives. In
control panel/System, there used to be a whole array of hardware, but
I deleted the multimedia lines that had ? marks, because the hardware
has been changed, and all of a sudden there is NO hardware listed,
only one group with a ? mark, and within that, one item with a
question mark.

The CD's I have include a CD writer and a DVD player. I thought that
though they wouldn't run these fancy functions without their own
software, but they would run as a basic CD reader with just what
Windows includes. Yes?

Any ideas?

**which I have, but it's on another computer and I can't transfer it
yet.
