Regarding the ZA, Mart, couldn't he just uncheck it in MSCONFIG and
reboot? That would be easier that the un/reinstall.

Probably so, HL - it's just a personal thing, but I like to eliminate by
elimination. It just removes the doubt and ZA was becoming personal with

me
g. As I said elsewhere, I've removed it from my XP box because of the
problems it caused me. YMMV

Painting the upstairs completed? - Only ground level work left then? -

Don't
tell us, but my guess is that you must have put the ladders away!

......and as far as your wife's solitaire game, take a peek at anything
you
have set to "auto update" or "phone home" in any way, i.e. Seti at Home.
Also, any item that you have set to run automatically or at a certain

time
of day/night.

Mmm...
I've found which part of Zone Alarm fouls up solitaire.

Ken, just for fun g try uninstalling ZA and see if that clears up
any/some/all of your anomalies. When you've done, you can soon

re-install
it!!
(Save your download - that way you don't need to go on-line again until
you've re-installed it, if you are worried about your firewall)

Ken,
Are you using some form of wallpaper?? If so, just for grins,
disable
that and run some tests.
Heirloom, old and working on a hunch (back)

Indeed I am, Heirloom, a photograph of my first great-grandson. But
let
me
add something I recently found out:

Iconoid recommended -- and wouldn't work properly until -- I set the
desktop specifics to NOT Show Web Content and NOT use Auto Arrange.

I
discovered that if Show Web Content was enabled the hourglass

appeared
alongside the mouse pointer arrow. In addition, I replaced a mouse
that
was
stuttering with the left button and the new one came with a new

driver
which
included things the old one hadn't. I stripped down the "additives,"

and
disabled an entry or two from the startup list.

I've gotten rid of the "Working In Background" hourglass but

something
else -- maybe a ZoneAlarm update -- played heck with the solitaire

game
that
my wife likes to relax with.

I'm taking the mouse back tomorrow to exchange it for a different

model
and
I've found which part of Zone Alarm fouls up solitaire.

I'm getting closer to restoring the computer to its usual proper

operation
but I may a little farther yet to go.

Thanks for all your comments.
