Default PCI multimedia audio device problem

Sorry about the plethora of messages - I'll calm down soon!

During the recent upgrade of my old laptop to 98SE I think I remember
seeing a message relating to audio devices somewhere along the line, but
I can't remember the details.

After the installation, "PCI multimedia audio device" was listed as
non-functional in the Device Manager, and I couldn't play audio CDs.

I tried to rectify the situation via the Properties Update Driver
route, but I and/or the system couldn't find one.

I then had a look at the driver CD that came with the laptop, and it
does indeed contain an audio section (Crystal CS4280 to be precise),
complete with a Setup file, which I executed.

However, something has gone wrong in the sense that "PCI multimedia
audio device" is no longer listed as non-functional in the Device
Manager, *but* every time I reboot the Found New Hardware Wizard comes
up, looking for "PCI multimedia audio device" drivers!

See
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/herb.ep...nimfurious.gif

There are thousands of Google hits for "PCI multimedia audio device" and
more then 100 for "crystal audio setup", but I can't quite make sense of
it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

originally win95 on that right : so you installed win95 drivers from
the original CD...

Originally Win98, actually, upgraded/installed Win98SE recently.

www.driverguide.com use the search engine search for CS4280 company
Crystal Semiconductors...you will find many hits ..one should work for
you

I know , it's a pain , but laptops are like that :

Thanks - I found an entry that looked very promising
(http://members.driverguide.com/drive...riverid=129002), but
the problem persists after installation of the driver, i.e. the dreaded
Found New Hardware Wizard still comes up when I reboot :-(

Any more ideas?

Thank you.

looks like a likely one (I've had to try 4-6 different ones when looking for
the "correct" Crystal driver)

what does the new hardware wizard say that it has found ..still the audio
card ?
