Thanks - I tried that, but I couldn't see any sound-related entries in
Safe Mode (perhaps I didn't look properly?)

All I saw was an "unknown device" or words to that effect, which I
removed, but the Found New Hardware Wizard ttill comes up when I reboot
normally :-(
