Default Router Firewall

I'm not understanding. To recap.....My internet service (and email) is with
a cable company (Cogeco) in Ontario, Canada. I travel to Hilton Head and
connect to the internet with a rental condo's wireless connection. I can
receive my email via my Ontario cable company directly with Outlook even
though I am connecting with Hargray but I cannot send email directly because
Hargray's SMTP port is different from Cogeco's. Am I right so far?

So is it being suggested that the next time I visit someplace that won't
allow me to send email that I should try Verizon's SMTP port? Or if that
won't work, am I supposed to call the local cable company and ask what port
is used for sending even though my relationship is with a cable company back
home?

Sorry to be a bit thick on this but I would be grateful for a bit more
clarification.

If you are trying to send using Cogeco's SMTP message submission servers,
from a network provider other than Cogeco, there are two possible issues:

1.) Cogeco uses an "Access Control List", a database of their IP addresses,
and only allows inbound connection from IP addresses under their control.

2.) The network prover use are connecting through blocks outbound port 25
access to SMTP message submission servers other than their own.

You will need to contact Cogeco support to see how they permit access to
their SMTP message submission servers. If they don't provide alternate
access using either port 587 (RFC defined message submission port), or port
465 (/de facto/ standard for alternate access), you will not be able to work
around the problem by changing ports in your email client.

One possible work around is to set up a Gmail account to "send as" using
your regular email address. Gmail does allow access on both port 587 and
port 465. And they allow an account holder to use an email address different
from 'gmail.com', after a verification process.
