Default Slow PC

The reformat/reinstall is usually the ONLY thing that these con-men will do
(and then tell you that you need to upgrade, because the pirate copy of XP
that they put on there won't run properly, either!)

Occasionally, you may get one that will attempt a proper solution, but
rarely is that cost-effective, as it can take upwards of 4 man-hours, and it
can become cheaper to buy a new machine than fix the old one.

If your PC is slowing down, then you need to reduce the number of things
running on it - it's as simple as that! Such things may not be easily
visible, and you may not be aware that they are running (Trojan/virus) - or
they may be hugely visible, but you may not realise that they are killing
your machine (Norton) - or you may just be used to working on a more
powerful machine, so that you open too many windows on your lowly home
machine.....
Every machine in the world is different 5 minutes after it comes out of the
box - only you can configure your machine in a way that is acceptable to
you. A professional can remove what he/she considers crapware - only to have
you screaming "where's my Incredimail???" (or whatever).

YOU have to make the decisions, folk like us can either facilitate them with
advice, or action them face-to-face (at a price g). You tend to get what
you pay for.

Slow PC (Windows Me)

Having an intermediate skill level for PCs, I employ the common
maintenance
practices to keep my PC operating smoothly. Often I get flyers in the
mail
from PC groups offering their services. One of their services is to fix a
slow operating PC.

Short of reformatting and reinstalling an operating system, what would
these
groups do to a slow PC that I would not have done?

Thanks,
Jerry
