Yes, it's perfectly safe to install Dx9 over Dx7 - and is the route that
people who use the MS Security CD on a fresh install of ME will take.
To create a System Restore point - first check that System Restore is
working!!
Do a search for the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SMGR.DLL - right-click on it, and
select Properties. Click on the Version tab....
If you are to have a working System Restore the File Version must be
4.90.0.3003.
If it's anything else, then It's possible that you haven't installed the
System Restore Patch - without which any current restore points are just
space fillers.
To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install

Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
Once you've checked that, and corrected if necessary, then you may want to

When I do the Windows update, one of the critical updates
is DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime. I havenīt done the
download yet because I have some doubts.
First, the Microsoft recommends that Windows Me users

utility before, so I would like to know how to create
that "System Restore" point.

in the end, it said that the information in the article
applies to Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Runtime and Microsoft
DirectX 8.x Runtime users.
I have the Directx 7.1(or 7.0?) on my computer. Is it save
to do the update to DirectX 9.0b?
