The next time I have to reinstall tshoot.inf the box will ask me to insert
the disk but I will say "ha ha", hit search or whatever that offering in the
box is called, and navigate instead to the cab file (same as yours) on E
Drive where bnts.dll is located and install it. It will be a simpler
operation for others to do than for me, but to paraphrase John Wooden after
he finally lost a basketball game, "700 million Chinese couldn't care less"
(this was before Windows 98, however).

Well... that's interesting... that "SourcePath" already is
"C:\Windows\Options\Cabs", yet you were asked for a disk, after you (I
presume) R-Clkd Tshoot.inf & selected "Install". I don't know what's
going on, then. I do know, "bnts.dll" is indeed inside one of those
.cab's, WIN98_60.CAB (for Win98SE).

You seem hesitant to cause damage to your machine. Therefore, I am
hesitant to expend much more brainpower on this, especially as my
first thought (SourcePath) wasn't right. Well, you earlier posted...

But a question: When I click Tshoot.inf I get a message to insert the
Windows disk. To see what was going on I clicked skip, I believe it
was, and
the new box said failed to find bnts.dll. So I reinstalled Tshoot.inf
again
but this time when prompted to insert the disk navigated to bnts.dll
(from
where I store .cab files on the hard drive) and that took care of
things.
But my question is, is this normal procedure or is bnts.dll supposed
to be
integrated seamlessly into the install process?
.....Unquote.......

I see now, you "navigated to bnts.dll (from where I store .cab files
on the hard drive)". What does that mean? Can it be you navigated to
the actual file, which is in C:\WINDOWS\HELP? To the HELP folder? (I
was thinking you navigated to the folder that holds your .cab's,
which you say is C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.)

Anyway, it was seamless for me. I was never asked a thing.

PCR - I'm in over my head on the knowledge front here, but hey why
sweat minor details like that. I'll try intuition instead, to wit:
My white box also has "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs" listed across from
... Setup SourcePath in the registry, but a *.CAB file search of
course comes up with totally different CAB files in C than those
copied to E drive from the disk. So if "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs" is
shorthand for 'search C drive first and if you don't find anything
tell user to put in OS disk', I'm not sure that substituting the
path to the relocated cabs on E is a good idea because what if what
you actually need is on C drive?

I get a perverse pleasure out of trying out some of this esoterica
but on this one I don't feel as if I know enough of the story yet.

Well, each of the keys I posted was preset by Compaq with
"C:\Windows\Options\Cabs", where they had installed them. After
moving "Options\Cabs" to "E:\", I changed them all. They seem to
have remained so, even after at least two IE6 cumulatives have been
installed.

You have this...?...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\SysDM
SearchLocation "D"

...without even a colon? (Well, frankly, I don't know what that one
is.) One thing: It doesn't appear to be my "save location default &
Windows Explorer open default", having what I do in there.

Anyway, probably, you should...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup
SourcePath "E:\OPTIONS\cabs\"

...BUT... substitute YOUR Path there. That's really the one.

Actually my question was really more to do with whether the install
process for tshoot.inf was automatic once you click the file, or
whether you had to go out and get bnts.dll from any location, CD or
hard drive.

I said: "bnts.dll" was not mentioned when I installed Tshoot.inf. No
file/folder was asked for. It knew where to go.

Another thing: "Tshoot.inf" must be R-Clicked (not L-Clicked), &
"Install" selected. Are you just clicking it?

Think I'll take a flyer on this one. You show a couple of things a
little different compared to what I see in my registry, for
instance, "OLSSrcPath" doesn't exist, and "SearchLocation" has the
entry "D" (period), which is my save location default & Windows
Explorer open default, and if they are related to this I don't want
to have to re-associate them, not that it can't be done. Actually
my question was really more to do with whether the install process
for tshoot.inf was automatic once you click the file, or whether
you had to go out and get bnts.dll from any location, CD or hard
drive. (I used to express things clearly but then I read the
explanations at WU for the latest critical updates and I fear they
did a number on me).

Click OK to the requestor stating that a disk is required. Another
requestor will appear & allow you to locate the folder that has
your Windows .cab files.

For me, that always was "C:\Windows\Options\CABS", but recently I
have moved them. I changed all of the following manually, after
moving the OPTIONS folder to E:\...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\SysDM
SearchLocation "E:\OPTIONS\cabs"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup
CommandLine "/T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=E:\OPTIONS\cabs /IS /IW
/IQ /ID /IV /IZ /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"
OLSSrcPath "E:\OPTIONS\cabs\OLS"
SourcePath "E:\OPTIONS\cabs\"

Yes!
Change epitaph to "Neglected To Follow Instructions".

They wait for copyrights to expire. That is a fitting epitaph
for many of us: "It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer".

Anyway, did you...?...

"START button, Find, F&F, Tshoot.inf"
R-Clk it & select "Install"

That must be done once per IE cumulative, if you want your
Troubleshooters. After that, either use my .reg's or Dundat's
program. Of course, the install of Tshoot.inf could be exposing
one to a vulnerability. Those .reg's only play with a kill bit,
& likely do not undo the install. So, really you may wish to
content yourself with...

http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot
...which also is the Troubleshooters.

* Re Bindar Dundat: "Been there, done that" (alignment of
planets, or just good writers?)
* If you decide to spring for the Chausson you'll wind up
detesting Richard Rogers, who lifted the melody for "Victory at
Sea", note for note, like a pirate. Made a career of doing
stuff like that. * And I suppose I should also mention that I
couldn't get the Dundat Workaround to work this time. I did it
two ways. First I downloaded the patches and then reinstalled
the workaround over itself. When that didn't work, I reverted,
deleted TShoot.exe, redownloaded, then installed TShoot anew,
but that didn't work either. This is not the worst Windows
problem I've ever had, in fact it's a relatively small one, but
it's annoying that I couldn't get this thing to work beyond the
initial installation.

So I'm at a four-way crossroads: Updates with no Troubleshooter
(not the worst thing that could happen), Troubleshooter with no
updates (like 95% of the users, I'd bet), do the registry hacks
(for more advanced users but "been there done that" enough to
probably get through it) and, my preference, keep trying until
TShoot.exe works. On my tombstone will be inscribed the NT4
chestnut: "It Is Now Safe To Turn Off Your Computer", if I can
work out the intellectual property issues with Microsoft.

Well, careful what you say. It is reported Dundat went on a
