Update: I swapped out the mobo in question for a slightly different
one (in order to test all of the components being used, ie the ram,
cpu, graphics card, floppy / hard / optical drive). I used another
Supermicro board, this time a P6SBA, and the hardware detection
problem did not occur - all was well. The replacement mobo is
"simpler" than the first (problematic?) mobo in that it does not have
SCSI.

I am beginning to suspect that something could be faulty on the first
mobo.
