This Registry patch will undo what you did and give you the
functioning back. It's from
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm

Always back up your Registry before applying any such patch!

REGEDIT4

;This Registry file restores Control Panel access from Start Menu
"Settings."
;It's primary use is to restore this if you've used TweakUI to remove it.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explor
er]
"NoControlPanel"=hex:00, 00, 00, 00

Note the regedit4 file must have a blank line at its end.

And I recommend running all your anti-spyware tools and your AV tool to
confirm that the machine is clean.
And Defrag.

You can use scanreg /restore with Win Me as you can with Win 98/98SE but
remember this just restores the registry rather than system restore

which
will also restore any modified or deleted system files. IOW system
restore is far more powerful and useful than scanreg when a user is
experiencing serious problems.

Turning to TweakUI, v1.33 was written and released for use with Win Me.
TweakUI is perfectly safe, what is not is what a user can do with

TweakUI.
g Hence the list of gotchas that Noel posted. Also TweakUI should

not
have caused the loss of the Accessories folder in Start | Programs and I
don't actually think it can cause that particular problem nor is TweakUI
the cause of an empty control panel - something that is far more often

the
result of unwanted malware.

System Restore

To boot to DOS in ME you have to use a Boot Disk - if you don't have
an ME disk, then download the OEM ME Boot diskmaker from
www.bootdisk.com, run it to create the floppy, then boot from said
floppy.
Thanks for the links. The boot disk will start my recovery process.

I gather that ME does not have the scanreg/restore option, and uses
System Restore?

Did you remember the cautions with TweakUI???

Note - there are a few cautions with TweakUI:-
1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop
tab 2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab
6) To move "My Documents" folder, right-click on the Folder, and
click Properties.

I've used Tweakui in W95/98 for IIRC about 7 years, saved info, never
saw your data above before. Still, I never unchecked "show Control
Panel", or Accessories, etc.

Tweakui did these things in error. On a W98 ng, an expert there never
uses Tweakui, I've never had a problem in W98SE. But I had exactly
what he described when I used it in ME. Is there a safe version of
Tweakui to use in ME?

Thanks again for your help, will report back when I start with the
boot disk.
