He doesn't need W98 SE just to be able to use partitions larger than 2Gb -
W98 (and, indeed, some versions of W95) can use partitions larger than 2Gb.

He cannot avoid using a third party partitioning utility if he wants to
avoid a complete re-installation. MS does not have a W98 product that can
change partition sizes without deleting everything.

If he does a complete re-installation then he may as well move up to W98SE,
if only for the added hardware support it provides. The full retail or the
upgrade retail are both suitable. Note that the upgrade retail does not
require a prior version to be installed - it only requires that he has the
prior version CD. The OEM version , while probably cheaper, may be
problematic.

If he's happy to stay with W98 and he wants a simpler partitioning scheme
then Partition Magic or BootitNG are both suitable for the task. BootitNG
is cheaper (the demonstration version will do the job) but somewhat trickier
to use.

Licensing is one reason.

Your Windows 98 SE is an OEM version and the terms and conditions of
the End User License Agreement lock that license permanently to the
first computer (the Thinkpad Laptop) that it is installed on.

It cannot be legitimately transferred to another computer even if the
original computer is lost, stolen, scrapped or destroyed.

And if you were contemplating installing the 98 SE on the Aptiva
desktop machine and also leaving it on the Thinkpad then that would be
a flagrant contravention of the licensing terms for any version of
Windows including the retail products.
