Regarding the password issue only!!

Rick suggested :-

Unless you're using M$ networking for something, delete it in Network
Properties. When you delete the .pwl files, next time it comes up *don't*
put a password in (press cancel).

DO NOT CANCEL!!

How to get rid of your Password? - 2 choices and both work:

1 - the Official way
"How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at
Startup"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;152104

2 - the Unofficial way:-
Search for files that end .pwl.
Rename each of the extension - one at a time - to .pwa, .pwb etc.
Re-boot and the offending one will now let you logon as a new user.
Enter your name (or whatever) BUT do not enter a password. Just press
Return. The important thing is to respond with Return (or Enter) and NOT
cancel.

Thanks for the help, Rick. I had a chance to look at the ME puter,

In Control Panel, no Network Properties, where to find it?

hmm... highlight the adapter in DeviceManager and hit the Properties
button (I think... sorry, I'm on Win2K and have a memory like a
steel...sieve)

My memory is 72 yrs old and 12 years of bad sleep!
Don't see any Network Adapter, only Dialup Adapter, (which is what I will
do). I can't see Properties, yet need to create a DUN account.

In Device Manager, I saw PCI Ethernet Controller, question mark, no driver
installed, so I removed it. When I rebooted, now I see a screen " New
Hardware Found", windows wants to find the driver for this- after I
removed it. How to kill this message, it did not appear in Add/remove,
????

clfmon.exe is part of a virus. You may want to look into that.

I will load my AV on this puter, but Stinger said it was clean.

Stinger is useful for a specific type of virus. I'd suggest (and use,
myself) AVG (grisoft.com) for virii, AdAware (www.lavasoftusa.com) for
Adware, and Search&Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) for Spyware.

I use AntiVir on my W98 puter, not as invasive as AVG.

Ok, but I'm not clear what Net Meeting has to do with me, have no
network.

I don't see any reason why it can't be deleted... a bit easier to do it
through ControlPanel/AddRemoveSoftware/WindowsSetup

Not in my W98SE. In this puter, not in AddRemoveSoftware/WindowsSetup.
(I get a temporary screen "rundl32 error..." ?

Can't uninstall, so I plan to just delete it.

Only items in Add/remove are the few I recently installed.

next time you're in DOS run
SCANREG /FIX

Yes.

The Internet is a network... been awhile since I used DUN (Dial Up
NETWORKING)... I think the only thing you need operational is "DialUp
Network" and "TCP/IP".

Yes, that's what I have on my W98SE puter with DUN. This SMC Compact USB
to Ethernet Controller is a driver, is not uninstallable, so I plan to
just delete it.

Yes, that worked fine.

Other than the awkward step of a boot disk just to run scandisk, I
guess I run it in windows. Not recommended in W98, but OK in ME?

It appears to work OK.

Ran fine, used the usual W98 stuff of shutting everything down except
explorer and systray.

Download and use ScanDefrag (www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag); it'll save
you having to hit up TaskManager among other things.

I saved it, but the Task Manager window in ME looks just like my W98, 4-5
items, easy to control. In XP puters , I see 40 or so items.

Another question:
Common files:
ODBC - empty

Microsoft Shared Files
Stationary
DAO
Textconv
Triedit
VGX

Can all these folders be safely deleted? Or are they required in ME?
Don't show up in W98SE.

most of that stuff sounds like it could be deleted at the source or
through Windows Setup or AddRemoveSoftware.

Can't uninstall as not in AddRemove, but moved the folders and after
reboot, only problem is the PCI Ethernet issue above.

Regarding password screen, since the normal things you mentioned don't
appear, I will go into my data file and try other fixes.

Coments on above?

Thanks,

Mike
