System Restore was first introduced in Win ME.
Sorry, but I have not heard of any program that will supply a simple
substitute.

Okay allan, but surely you jest.

maybe i asked for the wrong thing.
i'm looking for the equivalent to the program that allows you to set
a ' restore point ' .
Is this something that has been put in the too-hard basket?
Surely there is a program out there that can do this; else why would
XP have it as a standard norm if it wasnt important?
I for one know its important as i lost my whole computer for months
due to mishaps and dramas, but a simple restore point could have
taken the computer back to a time when all was well.

anyhow, thanks for the know-how on the character map, i did what you
suggested and will be playing with it.

g/h

sorry , but the best thing win98 has is "scanreg /restore" which lets you

go
to a previous registry (stores 4 registry backups by default)

one of my "habits" was to get a system up and running the way i like ,

then
make an image of the drive...so at least i had a good starting point
