Default Not enough memory, it says...

William,

You need to fix the vcache problem whether you are running Win 98 or Win
Me. For details see KBKB 253912 - ""Out of Memory" Error Messages with
Large Amounts of RAM installed" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=253912)
which you will see applies to Win95, 98, 98SE and Win Me.

The quickest solution to your problem is to install whichever OS you have
that gives you the best chances of running your software. The more
elegant solution is to give VPC a go even if it doesn't meet your
immediate requirements you may well find it useful at some future time.

I can't really help you with VPC but feel free to ask questions, probably
better via e-mail, once you have got it up and running. One essential
point to remember is to install the VM additions once you have your basic
virtual machine installed as this then allows more configuration etc. I
also use dynamic disks, in other words my virtual drives are not of fixed
size and are only of the size required for what I have installed although
note that once they get enlarged their size cannot be easily reduced. My
basic out of the box Win Me virtual drive is a 500MB file and the fully
updated Win Me IE6 SP1 drive 1.5GB (no major apps installed). Each
virtual "drive" being a single file on the host system. You can, of
course, share and access drives on the host. You can also decide how much
host RAM to allocate to the VM. Give it a whirl it's an amazing tool only
limited by the restrictions on accessing and utilising external hardware.

Mike, maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I'm getting the impression
that all we went through on that 'not enough memory' exercise would
have been obviated if I had fixed the 'MaxFileCache' as Ron pointed
out. This puts me into a 3-way dilemma:
1. Do I go back to ME and fix that and see if everything
clears up?
2. Or do I proceed with WIN 98 where I believe I have not much more
than finding the right modem driver?
3. Or do I put both of those aside and tackle something entirely
new, which just sprung to life today?
You can't make the decision for me, but I think I know what has
the best chance of producing results in reasonable time,. I think
it's easiest for me to fix that vcache and see if it breaks my Me
problem open. I'd like your opinion on that, and perhaps the exact
steps to follow in ME.
If that fails, the WIN98 seems most likely to take the least time
to get me 'on the air'.
But VPC is certainly the most elegant and flexible and
powerful. I'm thinking aloud here, and I'd appreciate your following
my thoughts with some fill-in.

I know.... it's 0215 in the U.K., but you'll be up before I am.
