Default Why???

Surprise, surprise, I'm back in business and all with just a little 'System
Restore', suggested by Dell Help/Support.
Vista isn't so bad after all, even with dial-up, simply takes some 'getting
used to'.
My next step will be to explore 'Ubuntu', which runs fine on this machine.

Harry,
Dialup and Vista make a strange combination. By the time your updates
finishing updating, it's time for new updates. Don't worry though. When
Microsoft discontinues support, there won't be any more waiting.

Am just getting aquainted with Vista, while still operating ME and to my
surprise discovered that ME is faster than Vista.
All in all there is an advantage in ME, because one no longer needs to
spend
time downloading all sorts of updates.
Vista has improved features and an advanced look but with dial-up it is
quite a bit slower than ME, despite dual core processing.
And not everyone can afford to 'upgrade' time and time again either.
In short: consider yourself fortunate.

Why do people still use Windows ME? Just upgrade to XP already.
