You probably could get cheap speakers but as I don't intend spending
anymore on that particular machine it doesn't matter and I don't have a
Walmart or Radio Shack where I live anyway.

I think they got the answer in this thread, that speakers need power.
If your board in your PC is not supplying power, you need speakers
with an AC adapter. If you have an old MB with a sound port with no
power, and speakers with no AC plug, you either need to get a sound
card or new speakers. Speakers are cheap. I only paid $40 for
decent magnetically shielded ones about 15 years ago. Surely you can
find some that work now around $10 at WalMart or Radio Shack.
