Default Windows 98 Updates noe IE crashes

Jeff,
If you look in the Win98.internet.windows_update newsgroup you will see info
on 896688. This latest update is apparently causing lots of problems for Win
98 users. The best answer so far is don't load it but that will not help
you! From what I have seen from the actual Security Bulletin MS05-052, the
update modifies a whole load of dll files so that they modify the "Kill Bit"
in CLSIDs. The bulletin says that they have done this COM object mod on a
whole load of files over and above what they did in MS05-038 as these
additional files display similar tendencies to those in MS05-038.(896727)
All to do with IE and Active X.

I would suggest try and remove 896688. If you don't have any luck with that
you could possibly check the file list in MS05-052 and using the Version
Conflict Manager change all the files back to the previous version. Once you
have done that you may wish to check all the individual entries in the
Registry to ensure the relevant "Kill Bits" have been reset.

I don't use the auto update Microsoft Updates. I periodically check the
update centre, let it do a scan a then note what it wants to do. I then go
away and read all the update info at leisure, let the dust settle and update
individually at a later date. I am running MS05-038 no problems and looking
at the chaos from MS05-052 I wont be loading that. However what worries me
more is that all these updates are cumulative and unless Microsoft actually
states they have overcome the problem with MS05-052 with Win 98/98SE, we
will not be able to load any further IE updates.

I downloaded and installed 3 critical updates 12/04/2005. Since this my

IE
6.(?) now crashes when I click on the History icon. I can copy and paste

the
dump but I am not at that PC at this time. Does anyone have any ideas?

Is
anyone else experiencing this problem?
