Well, I must say you are persistent, the question you asked:
" I'm at a loss to understand why any Win9x system should be calling
uxtheme -
this file is peculiar to Windows XP AFAIK!
Have you by any chance installed in incorrect version of some program?"
As ANYONE, on ANY system which does NOT protect against installation of
"wrong" system files,;
who installed IE 6 SP1, installed these files.
Shwapi.dll is used by most if not ALL Windows programs, AND IE, Explorer,
and dozens of other Windows and Windows based programs use and/or call these
files, as are these other XP files;
AND these files do call for these missing dlls, and missing functions;
THEN, the installation of these XP files, which was done in any OS which
installed IE 6, are calling for non-existent functions and non-existent
dlls,
THEREFORE, if you had followed the previous postings, you would have
noticed, that a style of debug program had been used to detect these errors,
and TRACE the problem to its root cause.
Moreover, per Microsoft own certification standards, these files can NOT
and could not be installed in any OS except XP, as they are unverified and
un-certifiable for installation. Why? Because they cause errors. They are
NOT compatible.
NOW for the "rest of the story" from the deleted segment:
" So, if I had to guess, there are probably several dozen attorneys waiting
patiently for Microsoft to officially declare that the support is over for
these systems, That would violate the prior court orders and be undeniable
contempt of court. Moreover, this would be reasonable cause for further
action. Lots of money for the attorneys again, and another big loss for
Microsoft.
So for Microsoft, it's apparent best option, is to do a Third Edition
upgrade for 98 with certified and validated files, and ensure that all
installations necessary to correct any bugs, flaws, or breaches, are
verified and certified to 98, and the other operating systems it has
compromised. That being, during (Microsoft is not going to like this) the
period which it must supply to ensure the bugs, flaws, and breaches can be
repaired. A reasonable time period? Probably what the court originally set
out in it's ruling.
Why would I say that?
Because it happens to be the cheapest route for Microsoft. However, as this
is the second time it has broken this system, it would appear necessary that
it do so absolutely free. {Send in your address with verifiable system
purchase {I happen to have two verified in their data base), they send you
the free cdrom, no charge.]
Again, IE 6 was, what, 2002, under Microsoft recommendation. and generally
installed via it's own upgrade site?
It does not matter that is was optional, it was presented as a recommended
safe installation.
{Sorry Bill, just trying to be helpful, and save the business another class
action Lawsuit.)" [end quote]
Of course, should you wish to dispute this, there is a readily available
forum, which you may not be exactly qualified to "play" in.
BTW: a EULA does not protect anyone or any thing from review, nor does an
"end of life". Bit of a hint here.
Curious why I might have suggested this?
Search for peoplescounsel on the web. I would put the address here, but
this apparently would NOT get posted if I did.
In fact, it will be interesting to see if not posting the address, but
suggesting looking there, will allow this to be posted. Other postings which
did have the address were NOT allowed posting, e.g. filtered out by the
forum or Microsoft.

WTH was that all about? - it bore no visible relation to the question that
I
asked, except referring to a list of files contained within IE6 SP1 which
are compatible with XP. Note that 'compatible with' does NOT mean
'exclusive
to'

Of course, since the cabs are crosslinked, certain files can not be
directly checked. (they could, but I won't take that time.) I may also
have
missed some files (not yet necessary to proof this activity).
I did not check the other files for system/other, looking only for XP or
possible XP file versions (except as otherwise noted), however, the
numbering in some files appears to be Millennium or other operating
systems,
in addition to those which are or were weighed as Win98/95.
Nor did I check the present files on my system. That, at present, is
unimportant.
Additionally, I did not bother to check for all errors being produced,
that
also is unnecessary at this point in time, service is still being
supplied
to these OSs.
Though all these files may not have been installed, most have been on
any
system which installed IE 6.
I think we can see from the base installation of IE 6.0, that any system
other than XP has been, or might be, seriously compromised at it's base
system level. Which happens to be the exact reason for the previous
extensions, and the Second Edition upgrade.
Win98 undeniably has been (anyone still using 95?, it's toast),
Millennium
probably has been, NT may have been, 2000 may have been, etc.

ISSUE 3 - IE 6 installation - the missing dlls a apphelp.dll,
userenv.dll, uxtheme.dll
The reason for the questions a I now longer have a test box to try
this
replacement/test installation with (though I used to have 5 to test
various
OSs).
The XP files are called (due to verified file replacement with XP and
other
OS files) by numerous programs and parts of WIN98, including
Explorer.
[This
is what testers used to do (us old geezers) to find errors and
answers
for
Microsoft, and future users (now us locked into failing systems)] So,
any
help out there? Someone still running throw-away 98 systems to test
this
with?
Issues 1 and 2:
To answer this and further potential questions and/or suggestions:
Per Belarc Advisor
Microsoft Corporation - Windows Installer Version 2.0.2600.2
Microsoft (r) Windows Script Host Version 5.6.0.8825
(BTW: thanks to who ever was recommending this, seems to be a good
prog
for
this type of activity, though I, personally, would NOT be connected
to
the
internet when using it. Call it what you will, but I prefer to be
overly
cautious. Anyone know if there is a potential BHO or other hijack
potential?)
Regretfully, due to the new problems in IE this had to be hand
edited,
as
I
can not save certain (or possibly any) forms of web pages (such as
txt)
from
IE. Moreover, many of these fixes were previously installed, then
uninstalled and re-installed to check for errors or corrections,
following
the proper installation order, of course.

Okay, the last postings have now died, lost in the obscurity of
thousands
of
postings. (constant problems ole32,shell32,other)
To keep it simpler to post any replies, I have assigned ISSUES.
Please
use
these for general comprehension purposes.
Issues 1 -Time to re-address the issues of inability to download
using
v4
in
either normal or from catalog for the 90???? critical updates.
Moreover, there are still the problems associated with java script
(which
appears to be the v4 problem, and other sites which use java [IE
indicates/notes script errors]) and other issues (such as need to
reload
(user and password) secure sites twice before entry is allowed
[such
as
hotmail/passport), and having to post to groups, such as this, via
offline
entries.
Before recommending re-installing from scratch, I advise of the
problems
associated with that. The major problem is that my program files
dir
is
at
5.56 gig WITHOUT installer and IE installation/uninstallation
files,
e.g.
months of work to re-install all these programs, which ARE
necessary
for
the
various types of work that I do, some of which requires INSTANT
responses.
Been directed to or have worked through most of the supposed
fixes/work
arounds found here and elsewhere (such as Microsoft troubleshooter
and
Knowledge base) regarding these issues; not stating I absolutely
have,
as
there are several hundred(?) suggested. Moreover, dealing with
apparently
several different problems, I am getting the impression that some
of
these
fixes/work arounds may be causing additional problems. I needn't
re-address
the IE 6 issue, I hope.
Issues 2 - As an additional issue, I receive this error now when
trying
to
install or reinstall programs, or upgrades to existing programs:
"An installation support file could not be installed. Interface
not
registered." (such as when trying to re-install the Dreamweaver
6.0
to
6.1
upgrade [MX suite])
Issues 3 - As an aside, has anyone tried to install the missing
dlls
called
by IE 6 to see if that corrects the errors? I do have XP available
to
"borrow" these files from if that might be a viable fix. If so,
how
would
these files be registered, and will they cause new problems?
General aspects - So, guys and girls, what say? Let's keep this
civil
and
lucid, what are the best shots at fixing these problems WITHOUT
several
months of apparent useless uninstallations and/or
re-installations?
[BTW -
thanks again Mae and others for the prior info, even if none of it
helped]
