Default Restore Points Answer

Can I fix this problem? I run Norton System Doctor. Is=20
this a problem or should I just make it a habit to=20
manually create restore points? How do I know if my=20
restore points work? Thank You=20
again for your help. =3D0)

If you can make manual checkpoints then system restore or=20

rather the state
manager must be running and this isn't the cause of your=20

problem.

There can be many reasons for lack of regular automatic=20

system created
checkpoints including running a program such as=20

seti@home, folding@home or
other similar programs, or because a background=20

application is fooling Win
Me's state manager.exe into thinking that the system is=20

not idle although this
is not in fact the case. Examples of the latter utility=20

include v4 of
MotherBoardMonitor (but not v5), Cacheman, The Cleaner=20

(TCActive and
TCMonitor) and Norton's System Doctor where users have=20

reported use of the
Disk Health sensor has prevented the creation of=20

automatic checkpoints. NAV7
has also been reported as causing similar problems in=20

certain circumstances.
Other users have reported similar behaviour due to their=20

always on cable or
ADSL connection continually polling their HD and thus=20

giving the impression
that the system is never idle.

A significant number of users report that 3.x versions of=20

Zone Alarm also
prevent the creation of automatic checkpoints but this=20

doesn't seem to affect
all ZA users (including myself). This problem seems=20

though to have been
fixed in the newer 4.x version of ZA Pro. Similar=20

problems have been
experienced by BlackIce users and other software=20

firewalls have also been
reported to cause some users similar problems.

One user has reported that B's CLIP UDF packet writing=20

software
(http://www.bhacorp.com/products/clip/clip.html)=20

prevented the creation of
automatic checkpoints and another that they had=20

experienced the same problem
with Roxio's DirectCD. Another user has also reported=20

that CookieWall by
AnalogX will prevent automatic checkpoints being made if=20

its "Scan for cookies
every .... seconds" is set to a value less than 121=20

seconds (two minutes).
