Problem with a fixed-IP address in the LAN

It's not a Compaq by any chance is it? I've noticed on mine that it does
something with DHCP on boot up at the BIOS level, although I always use DHCP
so don't know whether this causes problems or...

Sure this PC is not clashing with one given the same IP address through
DHCP?

Also, did you know that you can get DHCP to reserve a specific address...

Have you by any change uninstalled the networking software? Don't know how
to get it back on Windows 98 but you might know yourself, otherwise Google
is your friend.

Are you using Netbeui or TCP/IP? I imagine Samba only supports TCP/IP and
that it what modern Windows uses.

Are you using a long sharename? There is a limit of 15 (I think) characters
on the sharename on Windows 98. A quick google will point you in the right
direction.

How do I determine the source of multicasting?

Use something like Ethereal on a WinXP/WinNT/Wni2K machine on the same
network or connected via a hub (not a switch). You should be able to see
the "destination" address and then the source address....
