Make sure that you are doing the following:

1) using high quality cables with ALL 8 wires connected.
2) all node connections are set at 100Mbps, full duplex
3) there is only 1 NDIS or ODI compliant...

Intel pcmcia and usb devices are non-intuitive to install. 1st, you install
the drivers, then install the device, then let it autodetect with the new
driver/inf set you previously...

Anybody ever built a WAP out of a WNIC and Windows?

My concern is that using ad-hoc mode will mean that I can only establish 1
wireless connection, as opposed to the 15 that I can set up using a
commercial WAP. Is this correct?
