XP Pro as well as 98SE
If you are happy with how your computer works now, I would just stick
with it. Your hard drive is kind of small for a dual boot system but
doable and 256 of ram is not really enough for XP to run...

delete temp files older than 48 hours. This should be checked as some
programs/installs could need the files put in the temp...

IE6 buggy?
Had similar problems with IE6, lockups when multiple pages are loaded
(seemed related to flash). Lockups while trying to shutdown (same as
yours, unknown program not responding). I now use Firefox...
