Have you tried using System Restore in Safe Mode to go back to a date just
before the problem started?

Start Programs Accessories System Tools System Restore.

See if that works...

I have had no problems with deleting the (in)famous index.dat file and
keeping the cookies I want to.

And if you enjoy your privacy deleting "index.dat" is a must.

ALWAYS, and I do mean ALWAYS, reboot after the cleanup or it may mess up

After the cleanup you can see the "Details of files deleted".

You can even save the details to a text file (Right-click and save).

The risky part is the registry cleaner, as with ALL registry cleaners.

A question on going from ME to XP

Start with a winsock fix:

http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip

Download, unzip and launch.

Click the FIX button and reboot when finished.

A quick note if anyone reads this:

IERadicator will ruin WinME and System Restore.

Usually there are other options available to solve IE problems in WinME.
