The problem has been resolved.

Thanks for your help. The problem was discovered to be caused by a
half-uninstalled Norton Internet Security on the central Win98 pc. This
prevented the WinXP pc...

Have disabled windows firewall an the browser service on the new xp machine.
I am trying to see the file shares on the central pc home_start_1 which is
also the master browser. I can see the files...

Thanks. I will try disabling the Windows firewall tomorrow. But why should I
be unable to see only one of the 6 PCs? As far as I can see it is configured
