PC Boots to C Prompt

For some unknown reason to me when I turn on the PC the system gets to the
Windows98 logo then goes to the c: prompt. This has just started recently. I
can initiate Safe Mode and have run MSCONFIG...

What are the absolutely required programs for start-up? When I run MSCONFIG
the Startup tab reveals a good many programs, many with esoteric names. Which
are, if any, required?
