PC complains that printer is offline
 

Hello,

I have an Epson Stylus Color 800 and OS is Win98SE.

I used to be able to print from it before, even after I've installed
Fineprint.

But recently, after finally pinpointing the pc problem to be a faulty cpu
fan, and having replaced the cpu fan, I can't print anything from the
printer. When I try to test print, it will complain that the printer is
offline, while the printer is turned on. I've tried printing selftest pages
from the printer, and it still can print that out.

I've unplugged and replugged the connectors at both the LPT1 port and at the
printer while they are both turned off. I think I've checked everything.
The only thing I haven't checked is if I've dislodged anything inside the pc
while I replaced the faulty cpu fan.

Hope someone here can point me somewhere.

printer back online. you can do this within your computer
while both are online. Go to Start, Settings, Printers,
Then you will see an icon in there for your printer. Right
click on the printer. If it shows the printer to be
offline, click set it to offline and it should go back
online after that. I have seen this many times when I was
working in IT. Being a technician on and off for the last
20 years."

I don't think that it has anything to do with the CPU.

I know about that setting, so this is not the problem. The fact that I
mentioned that I've opened up my pc before to replace the cpu fan is just to
show that maybe I've made something loose. I've opened up the pc again and
found that I actually couldn't dislodge anything by simple nudges with
parallel port. It sits right on the motherboard without needing any
connection cables.

I've called Epson support and the guy said it might be something with the
Epson printer itself. Maybe the card is burnt or something, even though I
can get the printer to print out its own test page.

I don't have another computer at home. So can I do anything to isolate and
confirm the problem to be with something inside the printer??

I don't have another cable, and I can't find the option of uninstalling the
driver. I did reinstall the printer, and there now is a second copy of the
same printer. I've tried using it to print, but still without success.

I've recently installed Nokia software onto my pc for my Nokia 8310 and
there is now a virtual infrared LPT port and a virtual infrared COM port.
Will the presence of a virtual infrared LPT port confuse the computer?

If you delete the printer it will ask you if you want to delete the
associated files ....

also you may want to boot into safe mode and delete all the LPT ports , then
reboot to let windows redetect...

then try installing the printer again

Had a problem with the printer being reported that it was
offline. Replaceing the cable would solve it for a little
while. Then it would do it again within a couple of months.
After 4 or 5 new cables within 18 months got to checking
it deeper. The LPT port had a bad solder joint at the MB.
Replaceing the cable would seat the connection for a
while. I guess. Now I have a life time supply of printer
cables.

I've tried using a new printer cable, but still have the same complaint from
the pc.

I've just found out that when I send a print job to the printer, the pc
complains that the printer is offline. If I unplug the printer cable, pc
will complain that the printer is out of paper. If I plug that back in, it
gets back to the error of being offline.

So anything I can do? It is Epson Stylus Color 800.
