Best/easiest way is to create an Emergency Boot Disk on another 98 pc. Boot
to that floppy and choose CD Rom support in the menu that appears. You can then run the Setup program off the cd which btw is typically E: as the boot disk creates a ramdisk using the cd's normal D: designation. "DanT" wrote in message ... Do you have a laptop where you can only use the floppy drive OR the CD
drive, not both at once? Do you not have the original installation media (which should be a bootable CD)? What you need to do is use a CD writing program that can make a bootable CD from a Windows Emergency Boot Disk (EBD.) Normally, you boot to a floppy EBD, then use it to access the installation CD. If you can't use a floppy drive, you need to make a bootable CD version of the EBD and use that instead. Pretty sure all major CD writing programs have the ability to make bootable CDs from floppy images. Roxio, for sure, and Nero, Sonic. -- Gary S. I have a Win 98 CD but my laptop wont boot from the CD drive, thats why I
want to know if there is any way to get Win 98 floppy disks or get my CD onto floppy disks. Using the disk from inside Windows 98 isn't an option because the OS won't boot. "Gary S. You didn't confirm for me: You have a CD but you do not have a floppy drive?
At least not at the same time? If that's the case, you need to use a CD writing program such as Roxio to make a bootable CD version of the floppy startup disk (EBD.) You then make your laptop boot to the CD drive (you may need to change BIOS settings to accomplish this.) Once the Startup disk has loaded, with CD support, you then do your FDISK, FORMAT, etc., and then when it's time to install, you insert the Windows CD and run Setup from the WIN98 folder on the CD. -- Gary S. If the laptop has both a floppy and a CD drive, go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 98 boot floppy. Use it to start the laptop, select "Start with CD support", insert your Windows 98 CD, type "setup" and press "Enter". Ben |

no, i have a start up disk. What I need is the FLOPPY DISK VERSION OF WINDOWS
98 instead. My BIOS settings do not allow for the booting of CDs. I already have the CD version of Windows 98. Is there any way to download the OS onto FLOPPY DISKS or can i use my CD version to transfer it to FLOPPY DISKS? My Laptop only allows for the use of one drive at a time, and since windows won't boot because it's corrupt and won't boot CD's on startup I have to use my FLOPPY DRIVE. Dan, Try this: Boot to Dos or use your Win98 Boot diskette then add these lines to your autoexec.bat and config.sys files: To Config.sys: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE DOS=HIGH,UMB DEVICEHIGH=C:\windows\command\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001 To Autoexec.bat: LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 Remove your startup disk and boot to Dos Command Prompt Only now you should be able to access the CDrom. It may be one drive letter higher than normal. ie D: to E: After booting to Dos Command Prompt you can get into Windows Safe Mode with CDrom support by entering: Win.com /d:m These lines provide CDrom Dos support for my DVD and CDRW drives. They work on most CDroms. Regards, Bill Watt Win98 Computer Help & Other Information http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/ |

it doesn't work the my computer says it cannot locat win.com so it can't
boot, and a bunch of other files like himem.sys are missing. But would you happen to know where I could get win98 OS on floppy disks? The Win98 folder alone on the CD, is 124 MB, that's about 124 diskettes. I'm not sure what you are trying to do with the CD, a re-install or something else. Anyway you might consider this: The only two files you need to boot to Dos Command Prompt Only with CDrom support are Mscdex.exe and Oakcdrom.sys. They are on the startup diskette. Copy those two from A:\ to C:\. Remove the other 3 lines in the Config.sys file. Then change the remaining two lines to this: Config.sys file. C:\Oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001 Autoexec.bat file. C:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 Those lines provide CDrom support for my DVD and CDRW drives. They work on most CDroms. Remove the diskette and boot to Command Prompt Only and see if you can access the CD. If so, you can run Setup on the CD from Dos to over install and replace missing files. Then it should boot. Or, knowing you can now install the OS from the CD you could format the drive and then do a clean install. Before you do, copy the autoexec.bat, config.sys, Mscdex.exe and Oakcdrom.sys files to a floppy so you can copy them back. Then run Setup.exe on the CD. The idea is to boot to Dos with CDrom support without using a floppy so you can access the CD. With your limitation you are unable to boot with the CDrom. If you format make sure you will be able to access the CD this way BEFORE you format and that you can copy the four files back as the Format will erase them. Use Format /s to put the system files on the HDD. Format.com is on the Startup diskette. An easy way to re-install is when you can access the CD from Dos copy just the Win98 folder on the CD to your HDD then boot to Dos and run Setup.exe from that folder. There are two Setup.exe files on the CD the other one is only a shortcut. Whenever Windows needs something from the CD it will look in that folder first. You won't need the CD at all. MD Win98 (creates the folder first). Copy D:\Win98 C:\Win98 If you are unsure of anything post back.
