RAM Upgrade : Compatibility

Hi.

I have been using Win 98 since past 5 yrs without any issues and my setup is a 810E Motherboard/256 MB RAM/20 GB HDD/866 MHz Pentium III Processor

The RAM is rated at 133 MHz.

I want to upgrade my RAM and HDD. Can someone please advise how much RAM can I upgrade on 810E. What is the largest HDD supported by this motherboard.

Thanks,

Dinesh Jangir.

810E is just the chipset number. The chipset could have been used by
any motherboard manufacturer and there is no way of knowing or providing
answers to your question without more information. Give us more
information about your motherboard, what is the manufacturer name and
actual model number of the motherboard? If you cannot find the
motherboard information give us the BIOS ID string and we may be able to
find it for you. Either that or download a hardware ID utility like
Belarc Advisor, or Everest or Sandra.

As far as memory goes, if you go to memory vendors many of them have
utilities that can be run and they will properly identify the type of
memory required for your pc as well as the maximum amount that can be
installed on the board.

In addition to John John's excellent advice, I have to ask you why you think
you need a RAM upgrade. You already have plenty for most purposes (when
running Win9x). As for HDs, there are issues with size. That chipset
shouldn't have any problems, but Win98 has limits that you might run into
(my memory is going, so I can't recall the exact specs.) Make sure you find
out about those before buying a new HD. (I presume you want to add another
HD, not actually replace your current one?) If you don't get an answer here,
try /microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion. More people there who talk about
these limits all the time and will actually remember what they are.

Old RAM can be quite expensive and potentially problematic. You might want
to make sure that all this upgrading isn't better spent on a new machine.
