Can I reinstall Win 98SE ...

without losing all of my other programs/software?
i have a damaged win.ini file (on boot up Windows tells me to reinstall
Win98SE) and my Canon BJC-2100 printer will not work-error-"cannot
communicate with lpt1 port".

I really do not want to have to lose everything and do a "system
restore" as I have tax returns to finish before April 15th! All my data
is on this computer and I have no way to save or transfer it to other
media.

All problems started when I installed a USB Epson Stylus RX600 and the
Canon BJC 2100 is a parallel port printer. Is there anyway to connect
the Canon via the serial port or ??? I do not have the USB cable that
came with the Canon.

Also-how do I remove all of the ports/etc.-from device manager or ???

There are listings in the printer properties dropdown that shows 6
different ports and I do not know what they are for.

Thank you in advance!

System Restore does not overwrite your data. Reinstalling, even a repair
reinstall, is much more drastic than System Restore. If you have no way at
all to back up your data, or image your disk, any operation you attempt is
sufficiently risky that you might as well consider all your work history. SR
is least likely to disturb things, but...

Recommendations:

#1. Find a way to back up your data, at the least. CD-R? Burn your data to
disk before you proceed. If you don't have one, consider getting one.

#2. After backing up data, try the System Restore first.

#3. Only use a repair installation as a last resort, if nothing else works.
I can't help you with specific instructions for a repair installation. It
probably can be done from .cab files on the HDD, if they were written there
when the system was installed. Otherwise, it is, at the least, dependent
upon whether the discs you are working from are OEM, or retail.

How recently? Within the last 5 days?

If you are reluctant to run System Restore, remove the new printer and
replace the old, then boot with your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk and choose
4) Minimal Boot.

At the A:\ prompt, type "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space
between the g and /) then press Enter.

Follow the screen prompts and when asked, select the LAST 'good' date BEFORE
THE PROBLEM, continuing with the instructions.

Don't forget to remove the floppy disk BEFORE you tell the machine to
reboot.

As well as the registry, this will restore a previous good win.ini file

You posted this question to a Windows Me newsgroup and it would have
been better if you posted it to one that deals with Windows 98.

The other responses have talked about "System Restore" which is a
Windows Me component. It is not part of Windows 98 or 98 SE.

Here is what you need to do:

Turn on the computer and press the Ctrl key just as soon as the first
information of any kind shows on the screen. Hold it down until the
Windows 98 Startup Menu appears and choose "Command Prompt only" from
the menu.

When the computer stops at the C:\ prompt enter the following
commands:

SPEEDISK

That just loads the Windows 98 disk caching utility to speed up the
next stage of the process, which is:

SCANREG /RESTORE

Choose the most recent backup registry that is dated prior to the
onset of your problems. When the restoration is complete press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot your computer.

Good luck

Fair comment Ron, but it was the OP who referred to SR, so I ASS-U-MEd he
was talking about an 'upgraded' Win98SE to WinMe box. g

However, scanreg /restore does seem the most appropriate option - Let's just
hope it works!
