PPP Adapter. in winipcfg
 

Hello,

My pc is win98se and I have a broadband internet connection.

I have been using the broadband for a few years. And since the beginning of
this year, my internet connection will be intermittently lost. At first, I
thought something was wrong with the modem, which is terayon TA-102. I have
called the ISP to replace it. However, the problem is still there. Then I
tried to get used to it. Whenever I lose the connection, I will need to
reboot my computer to get the connection back (the modem does not need to be
flipped off then on).

I called the technical support again today, and we've looked at the modem
and it didn't appear that my modem was failing to provide a signal for me.
Then I run winipcfg and see that there are 3 entries: PPP Adapter.,
Microsoft TV/Video Connection and Realtek 8139-series PCI NIC. PPP adapter
is for dialup connection and Realtek is the network card for broadband. The
technical support girl said win98se will sometimes switch from the network
card to PPP adapter, although she doesn't know under what circumstances this
will happen. And the problem I've got is because my computer has switched
on its own accord from the network card to PPP adapter.

So are there any ways to force the computer to only use the network card so
that it will always use the network card to get online? Or how can I
uninstall ppp adapter so that the computer can't even choose to switch back
to it?

I notice you mention the NIC being a network card, just to be sure, is it an
adapter card or is it integrated on the motherboard? If it's integrated you may need
to see if you can disable PPP in the BIOS or try disabling it in Device Manager and
see if it holds. If you simply unininstall it, I believe it will only reinstall if
it's integrated.

If he's trying to get rid of the PPP Adapter, he would be looking at removing the
modem, not the NIC, wouldn't he? Or am I reading his post or your reply wrong
(wouldn't be the first time, eh?)?

Either way, the basis of your suggestion holds....whichever he needs to remove, it
depends on whether it is integrated or not, as an integrated NIC *or* dial-up modem
will reinstall if only removed from DM instead of being disabled in the BIOS setup,
or in DM, IIRC.

My motherboard is Asus CUSL2. The Realtek card is a standalone network card
that's plugged into one of the PCI slots, and the faxmodem is a separate
card plugged into the PCI slot.

As I will want to receive fax using the faxmodem card, I will want to be
able to keep this capability.

So could you explain again what I should do, now that you know more about my
pc's configuration.

The computer won't do that on its own.

What it will do, if you instigate a dial up connection, is change the
default gateway from the network card to the dialup and effectively
turn your broadband internet connection off, though as soon as you
hang up this dialup connection the broadband internet connection will
be restored.

If you want to change this behaviour, there is a box to uncheck on the
dialup tcp/ip advanced properties which says "use default gateway on
remote network"

If you don't have any dialers installed then have a look at the fax
software to see if there are any settings there which look suspect.

If you still can't resolve the issue, wait until the connection fails
then go to a command prompt and type

route print c:\temp.txt

Compare the contents of c:\temp.txt with similar output when the
broadband connection is working and if they are different then post
the output (of the temp.txt's) here.

Goto Control panel-Software-Windows setup, and remove 'Dialup
networking'. The PPP adapter will disappear. Your modem will still be
available for faxing.

I vote for Ingeborg's solution. Remove Dial-up Networking in the Network
applet of Control Panel. Will remove PPP and leave modem for FAX-only. I'd
have posted the same yesterday, but I don't have a modem in this machine so
I can't test.

If he's trying to get rid of the PPP Adapter, he would be looking
at
removing the
modem, not the NIC, wouldn't he? Or am I reading his post or your
reply
wrong
(wouldn't be the first time, eh?)?

Either way, the basis of your suggestion holds....whichever he
needs
to
remove, it
depends on whether it is integrated or not, as an integrated NIC
*or*
dial-up modem
will reinstall if only removed from DM instead of being disabled in
the
BIOS setup,
or in DM, IIRC.

My pc is win98se and I have a broadband internet connection.

this year, my internet connection will be intermittently lost.

technical support girl said win98se will sometimes switch from
the
network
card to PPP adapter, although she doesn't know under what
circumstances
this
will happen. And the problem I've got is because my computer
has
switched
on its own accord from the network card to PPP adapter.

So are there any ways to force the computer to only use the
network
card so
that it will always use the network card to get online? Or how
can
I
uninstall ppp adapter so that the computer can't even choose to
switch
back
to it?
