Use shift delete. This will delete files rather than place them in the
waste bin.

Hi no1slevin

If by "deleting files permanantly", you mean rendering them "unrecoverable",
you need a file shredder and/or multi pass over-writer. Google for file
shredders and see what you get.

Mike M's answer is basically correct, although this method will only remove
the location of the files from your HDD's file catalogue. There are file
recovery applications out there that can be used to try, with varying
degrees of success, to recover deleted files. Shredding overwrites those
parts of the HDD with random data thus rendering them effectivly
unrecoverable.

Sorry to poke my nose in and "correct" your answer Mike :-)

A common mistake that people made when trying to design something completely
foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

You "corrected" nothing but rather extended the answer in another
direction. It might perhaps have helped if the OP had actually said what
it was they were trying to do. If they wish to make a file unreadable a
shredder won't prevent a determined individual from reading the file with
the only truly reliable way being to physically destroy the hard disk.
