(navigate) to the C:Windows\Options\Instal or CABS folder, where there

They are very probably in one of the CAB folders on your WindowsME, but
mine is down at the moment and I can't help you. Wait until the gurus in
England arise and they will know which one. I ran into the same problem
with my camera, so I do know they are there.

Cheers.....Heather

I have taken these steps, and it said I had successfully installed the
hardware (USB 2.0 Flash Drive), but it does not show up as an available drive
in My Computer.

(The folder which you should be looking for [Instal or CABS] is the one
containing a whole series of .cab files - including BASE2.CAB which contains
the two required files.)

Jeepers! Nancy, wherever did you dig that thread from - it's over two years
old.

Firstly, although your USB Flash Drive is USB 2.0, it will only perform at
USB 1.x speeds as the WinMe drivers mentioned are for USB 1.x only. You will
need extra hardware AND drivers (associated with that hardware) for it to
work at USB 2.0 speeds under WinMe.

However, back to your prime issue - drive not showing. Are you sure that the
memory stick was properly formatted (Does it work [is it recognised] on
another (e.g. XP) machine?)

Also, take a look in Device Manager and see if any USB devices (or errors)
are shown there.

Do you have TweakUI installed? If so, you *may* have set a restriction on
the available drive letters.

Perhaps you might wish to try this little MS utility for checking-out your
USB stuff. If you have a copy of the Win98 CD, then see the following URL
and try the usbview.exe on the CD. (NB It's not on the WinME CD - but see
below)
"How to Use the Windows 98 USB Device Viewer Utility"
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;272584

You can download usbview.exe from MS at:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/tec...SE/USBVIEW.EXE

Alternatively, it still seems to be available from :-
http://www.srigc.com/softdl.htm
You'll find it about 2/3 rds down the page

If all this fails, try a System Restore and roll-back to before you first
plugged-in your USB stick. Then start over and make an exact note of all
screen reports.

HTH and good luck

In addition to Mart's suggestions if the flash drive appears in the Device
Manager but doesn't show in Windows Explorer check that the USB Flash
Drive is formatted as either FAT or FAT32 and hasn't been formatted as
NTFS.

Thanks to you both for your suggestions. Unfortunately, none of this really
did the trick, but I discovered by accident that my computer recognized the
flash drive after I rebooted without removing it -- go figure! I was just
trying to pull a music folder off an old machine, and I finally succeeded, so
no need to try further to resolve the problem, but I appreciate your support
just the same.

Hmm.. not exactly unheard of. Sometimes WinMe can be somewhat 'sluggish' in
enumerating (recognising) certain USB devices for the first time and a
re-boot has been known to help kick it where it needs to.

Anyway, well done Nancy, I'm pleased you've now got yourself sorted out and
thanks for the feedback - enjoy your music.

Yes Mike, I know and I nearly chopped my fingers off when I realised - the
spectre of a 'simple solution' - or at least a description of its
implementation - could have ended up as a multi-page tome. XP just isn't
interested g
