reinstalling windows Me

-- My sisters computer runs windows me and will not start when she turns it
on she gets a error message, file missing or corrupt
sys32/drivers/pci.sys----- She does not have the original cd rom and her
computer don't seem to do the recovery or restore options, is there another
way to get the computer going again without the original cd rom?

Possibly, but ...

First question is :- Can she boot her computer into Safe Mode?
(How to boot into Safe Mode? - The 'Official' MS method is holding down or
stabbing at' the Ctrl OR the F8 keys, BUT she will need to do this
IMMEDIATELY after powering up her PC and keep 'stabbing' at them until the
splash screen shows. She could also try the same, but using the Shift key
instead.)

If successful, your sister needs to look at Device Manager and determine
what (if any) error messages (Yellow exclamation or question marks) are
showing and advise us which devices are showing them.

Also, assuming your sister can run her machine in Safe Mode, she *may* be
able to find a complete set of WinMe Installation files on her C: drive. But
let's cross one bridge at a time. Someone here should be able to help
further.

BTW - are you really sure that your sister's pc is running WinMe?

I've just checked and found that pci.sys is NOT part of WinMe, but would
appear to be associated with Win2000 (and even XP)

Mart - I'm also struggling with a computer issue..3 yr old machine with XP
(can't locate the discs that came with machine - XP was installed when I
bought it new). Need to reformat and reinstall. I have WinME CD with keycode
and XP upgrade CD and keycode as I had purchased for this machine's
predecessor which is no longer in existence. Without a floppy drive or any
ME startup disc, how can I reformat the hard drive, start up, install ME and
then upgrade to XP? Thank you in advance for guidance!

You don't have to install Win Me, having the CD should be sufficient. The
only problem that might occur is if your Win Me CD is not a "proper" Win
Me CD but instead contains an image of the operating system but that was
relatively rare for Win Me systems although common for new PCs running
either XP or Vista.

Boot your system using the XP upgrade CD and select to clean install. You
will be asked at some point, I forget exactly when, to verify your right
to be using an upgrade version by inserting the CD of a qualifying
version, at this point remove the XP CD and insert the Win Me CD. Follow
the on-screen prompts and you should be OK.

If you select to clean install XP you will be given the option to reformat
your hard disk.
