ME & XP Networking Problems
 

I have a ME computer and an XP computer which i installed the network on. At
one point, the ME computer could not access the XP computer because of the
firewall on the XP computer. Now the ME computer doesn't work, and it acts
as if i never installed the network, even though i have tried reinstalling
the network.

I just would like my network to work.

What do you see in Network Properties? There are a number of menus and tabs
to check, but what is in the "Configuration" tab of the first menu you get
on properties. Mine shows these items, but your list should be different:

The following network components are installed:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Microsoft Family Logon
Dial-Up Adapter
HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
LapLink USB Network Cable
TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP - HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP - LapLink USB Network Cable
USB-USB Network Bridge - Dial-Up Adapter
USB-USB Network Bridge - HP EN1207D-TX PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
USB-USB Network Bridge - LapLink USB Network Cable
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

You should have, at the minimum for a network, the Ethernet adapter (likely
by a different manufacturer than HP), and the TCP/IP protocol bound to that
adapter. The fourth and sixth items in my list.

I have all the necessary components, but it just doesn't work. It used to
work, but it stopped, and I haven't uninstalled anything since it was working.

just thought it would help to know that i can access the shared files and
printers on the ME computer from the XP computer.

Well, when somebody tells me that their car just stopped working, I have to
really take a guess. I assume that the Windows ME isn't completely dead;
i.e., what isn't working about the computer is the LAN. Otherwise you
wouldn't even be able to start it at all.

I began with the components, because them not being there would be a show
stopper. I suppose that the next thing I can suggest is to run 'winipcfg'
from the Start Run menu. Use the button to get "More Info ". Right
click on the title bar to get the "Copy" menu. Paste that into a post. Mine
looks like this:

If you have just an Ethernet adapter, and a dial-up modem, you will only
see two adapters in the list. The Ethernet adapter should have the LAN IP
address. Other stuff will depend upon what you have configure. If you have
the LinkLocal IP address, something like 169.254.x.x, then you have a DHCP
problem.
